First established in 1868. Shermantown quickly became the milling center for the White Pine mining district. By 1869 eight mills and smelters were in operation. Along with two sawmills, an assay office, a two story sixteen room hospital, two lawyers offices, an unknown number of saloons, a water company, a telegraph office, a three story Mason and Odd Fellows hall and of course a post office. The population peaked at around 3,000.
Shermantowns boom was brief though. When the Treasure Hill mines failed in 1870, the town quickly started to fade and the population plummeted to 200 within the year. The last family remained until 1891.
