Just finished cleaning the last of the gear and putting things away for next year. The trip was a success!!! We had 11 rigs show up. A few early Bronco's, a full size Bronco, a '72 K5 Blazer, a '72 Dodge Power Wagon, 2 Ford F250's (a '73 and a '76), an Isuzu Trooper, a first gen four runner, and 2 Land Cruisers (a 40 series and a 60 series). We had folks from as far away as Maine, Massachusetts, California, and Idaho. We also had representation from Utah, Wyoming and Colorado. Most of the group met up at the rest area and were led by Dave to camp. I stuck around as we were missing a few folks who had trouble during their caravan. The road to the camp site was rougher than last year when we pre ran it but all the rigs made the drive without issue. We had a quick rain shower on Thursday as folks were setting up camp but it passed and only dampened the ground (and not our spirits!). While the hors d'oevers were being set up, Donavan got a fire going. The rest of the night was spent reconnecting with old friends and making new ones. There were 8 kids in the group and they all had fun scrambling around the rock formations and climbing on the blobs. Friday morning dawned sunny and chilly but it warmed up quickly. After a casual breakfast, we loaded up 7 rigs and trucked on down to South Pass to take in the history of one of Wyomings biggest gold mine towns. The group spent the next few hours touring the restored town and learning how the miners lived and worked in back in the day. The kids were all offered a special treat in that they were given small back packs which contained books and other items that related to mining and the town. Also in the pack was a gold pan and the kids were encouraged to pan for gold in the creek that ran through town. After lunch, we met our tour guides for the private tour of the Carissa Mine. Everyone said that the tour was amazing!!! The guide really knew her stuff and unlike other mines which are open to tours, the Carisa features working mill equipment which was operated for the enjoyment of the folks on the tour. After the tour, we all gathered up and drove back to camp. Once at camp, the pot luck dinner was a huge hit, with all types of home made treats like cole slaw, ribs, corn bread, chili, buffalo chicken dip, mac-n-cheese, Hawaiian Chicken and a cooler full of liquid refreshments. Another fire was started and more chat and witty banter ensued. Both Thursday and Friday nights were without moon so it made the star gazing phenomenal, especially from atop the observation tower. Saturday's morning was warmer than the day before and the coffee was soon flowing as people prepared for the day. Dave led a trail ride with one rig signed up. They had a great day and ended back in Atlantic City for lunch and refreshments before heading to camp. The rest of the group headed to Louis Lake for a day of canoeing, fishing, and swimming. Sometime just after lunch, we had some visitors from the future. A few of the Wasatch Cruiser brunch met us at the lake. They were on a trip to the Red Desert of Wyoming. They hung out for awhile and we compared stories and swapped info on place to go and see before heading out. Back at the lake, some fish were caught and released and a few hearty souls braved the high mountain lake temps for a little swimming. Around 4:30, we all packed up and drove back to camp for the Expedition Utah sponsored dinner. Bob's Build-a-Burger Bar was opened for business around 7:00pm and fresh burgers were grilled of real charcoal and served up with all the fix in's!! Everyone built the burger to their own taste and chased it with Glenn's Hot Rod Baked Beans and potato salad. While everyone was finishing up the dinner, the BB Gun shoot out began. Lucas won the kids contest and Jake was awarded the trophy for the adult contest after an intense, 3-shot pistol shoot out. We all returned to the fire and wound down the rest of the evening with tall tales and stories from way back. Sunday morning dawned with several of the hearty members getting up super early and making the climb up the observation tower to sit silently and take in the rising sun. Dave treated everyone to fresh Strawberry Shortcakes for breakfast and a pot of cowboy percolated coffee was shared by all. Camp was broken down, good byes were said, hugs exchanged and everyone began the journey back their futuristic lives. All in all, it was a good weekend!!! Until next year….enjoy the photos
